Guides for shop owners · Massachusetts and Connecticut

How much is my auto repair shop worth?

A shop's value mostly comes from the profit it makes and how steady that profit is. The building, if you own it, is valued on its own like any commercial property.

If this sounds like youYou've built something, and you want to know what it would bring before you decide anything.

Your options

What you can do.

OPTION 1

Profit the shop makes

The biggest driver. Buyers look at what's left after paying everyone, including a fair wage for the owner.

OPTION 2

How steady it is

Repeat customers, a good team and clean books raise the value.

OPTION 3

Equipment

Lifts, alignment rack, scan tools and how old they are.

OPTION 4

The building

Valued separately, based on location, size and condition.

Before you decide

What to watch for.

  • A shop that depends on the owner every day is worth less.
  • Messy books lower offers.
  • Don't count the building twice.
