One of my techs wants to buy my shop. Is that a good idea?
Selling to a tech can keep the shop in good hands. The two hard parts are usually money and running the business side. Being honest about both protects your relationship.
If this sounds like youYou love that your tech wants to carry it on, but you're not sure they can run it or pay for it. You don't want to hurt them, or yourself.

What you can do.
Sell to your tech with a bank loan
You get paid, the bank takes the risk.
Sell to your tech with you financing part
Helps them, but you take on risk.
Bring in a buyer and keep your tech as manager
They get a bigger role without the debt.
Sell to someone else
Hard conversation, but sometimes right.
What to watch for.
- Ask if they can get a loan before you get far.
- Ask your own CPA and lawyer to look at any deal you'd carry.
- Think about whether they can handle the books, not just the bays.
Owner to owner, and it stays private.

Can my employee get a loan to buy my shop?
Sometimes. Lenders will look at their credit and the shop's numbers.
